After 36 years of helping people find their place in Sarasota, I’ve seen firsthand how Florida’s housing landscape has changed—and how tough it can be for buyers to find the right fit. Our state is a unique example of what happens when the homes available don’t always line up with what people truly need or can afford. It’s not just the price tag that matters: insurance, HOA dues, maintenance, storm risks, and even how much you’ll need to drive can all tip the scales when deciding if a home really works for your lifestyle and budget.
In established Sarasota neighborhoods, some of my most rewarding work has been guiding clients as they downsize, stay near family, or transition to townhomes, cottages, or apartments that better fit their current stage. The real challenge ahead for Florida—and for all of us who care about this market—is whether the next generation will be able and willing to step into the homes being passed down or newly built, especially if more flexible options in size, price, and location aren’t on the table.
Having grown up with snowbird parents and made a career of helping people find the right Florida home, I know how important it is to have choices that fit every chapter of life.
